10-Minute Mindfulness: 71 Habits for Living in the Present Moment When given the options for the required reading, I chose 10-Minute mindfulness: 71 habits for living in the present moment (Scott, S., & Davenport, B., 2017) because as a busy wife, mom, student and nurse I needed to be able to implement something in my life that could potentially help me but would have minimal time requirements. I have been interested in learning about meditation since my daughter returned from a 14-day retreat at which the stay included requirements of complete silence intended to help the attendees focus on meditation and self-reflection. It has helped me reduce my own pain by doing a quick meditation before my pain becomes overwhelming. The practice of detachment and non-judgement of anxious thoughts and feelings helps lessen fearful reactivity to the thoughts
(Scott & Davenport, p. 20, 2017). Taking a quick time out has helped not only myself, but my ability to be a nurse capable of teaching my newfound meditation has hopefully started more people on the same journey. I have been able to help patients in my practice reduce their stress by encouraging them to meditate during procedures and have noticed that meditation combined with good explanation of the procedures has a great reduction of pain.
