Guide to owning and taking care of an Alaskan Malamute.

What was once a sled pulling hunter, is now a cuddly, energetic pup! The history of the Alaskan Malamute can be traced back thousands of years to the arctic regions of North America. These majestic dogs were bred by the native Inuit people and are known for being energetic, loyal, and protective of their pack. Although Alaskan Malamutes are cute and cuddly, they aren’t recommended for first-time dog owners. This dog’s physical and personality traits make it the perfect pet for previous dog owners.

Traits Alaskan Malamutes are known for being protective, affectionate dogs. According to the article “Alaskan Malamute” by Dr. Stuart Fitzgerald, DZ.com, “Alaskan Malamutes are very affectionate dogs, and bond strongly with not just one individual, but rather with the whole ‘pack’. (DZ.com 1)” As a result, they thrive in active, engaging environments which make them energetic yet playful dogs. Malamutes are known for being extroverts, which makes them great around new people that they are not yet familiar with. They are also very friendly and most of the time great with kids.

Due to their thick fur, Alaskan Malamutes thrive in the cold weather and enjoy playing in the snow! One thing that people tend to notice quite quickly is the way they look like stuffed animals.
