Throughout the book, the author uses characters and situations to teach the detrimental consequences of drugs and alcohol. In the beginning of the book, Garnet Raven, befriends Lonnie Flowers, a drug dealer and through him, he becomes involved with drugs. However, he soon gets caught dealing cocaine by the police at a local club and is charged five years. Although this book is fictional, this type of event happens in real life. Criminals get caught and are punished and it is important for high school students to know this because it can change their lives. Its plot allows readers to easily relate to the character’s emotions and feelings. Wagamese also reveals the harmful results of alcohol and drugs which is good for high school students to avoid. In addition, he also discloses many harmful effects that Canadians had on Native Americans which gives high school students insight on the culture of Native Americans. Garnet’s educational story brings to light important information high school students need to
