“Shooting an Elephant” by George Orwell is a good story that shows great aspects of the elements of a short story. All writers or authors have different stylistic choices. These stylistic choices are what form their stories. Orwell’s choices are what make him a special writer and author. George Orwell’s stylistic choices in character development, vocabulary, and theme help him create a successful short story. One of the main things that made George Orwell’s short story successful was character development. In the beginning of the story he is not liked by the people of the village. An elephant breaks loose in the village and Orwell does not want to shoot it. The people of the village get to him and Orwell ends up shooting the elephant thinking that maybe the people will like him more or that it was the right thing to do. In the end of the story George realizes that he made a mistake and regrets shooting the elephant. …show more content…
Throughout the short story he used strong word choice and good sentence structure. Vocabulary is a main factor in any short story or book. In “Shooting an Elephant” by George Orwell the vocabulary was just right. In the story the vocabulary wasn’t extremely fancy or too dull; it was good and easy to read. This made his short story even more successful. In “Shooting an Elephant” by George Orwell theme was another key factor to creating a successful short story. Regret caused by peer pressure and bad decisions is the main theme of the story.
