Give an overview of the healthcare information exchange system used in your state of practice. If one is not available, give an overview of a health information exchange system in a neighboring state. Indiana operates a healthcare information exchange system known as the Indiana Health Information Exchange (IHIE). This system allows health information to be accessed readily and quickly. Currently, the IHIE currently includes over 100 hospitals in 38 different health systems. This includes over 19,000 practices, 54,000 providers, and over 20 million patients (“Your Healthcare Records Matter”, 2023). Within the IHIE, there are three different products that are used. One of these products is called OneCare, which allows access to patient data …show more content…
For example, other providers can see all medications that are prescribed. This can allow other providers to see if there are contraindications to new medications or treatments. With the HIE, providers can decide on the best plan of care for the patient that would allow for the best possible outcome. Can the patient use the healthcare information exchange system? The HIE allows doctors, nurses, pharmacists, other healthcare providers, and patients access to a patient’s medical information (“What is HIE?”, 2020). This improves the speed, quality, and safety of patient care. Instead of patients carrying all their medical information from provider to provider, all the records are stored electronically and available for use. However, the view of patients is different than what the providers can see. Also, patients are able to review labs and results for tests and procedures.
