Unit – 6 Learning Journal Infections that are mainly caused due to sexual activities are referred to as sexually transmitted diseases or STDs. Since these diseases are transmitted sexually, these symptoms or clinical presentations can sometimes be similar to one another. However, depending on the pathogen, treatment can vary. So, it’s important to carefully diagnose, not to miss or delay the treatment. In this paper, two sexually transmittable pathogens with similar clinical features will be discussed, along with the consequences when they are misdiagnosed. 1. Yellow, green, or white discharge is found in both male and female patients with gonorrhea whereas yellowish discharge with a strong odor in women and clear or cloudy discharge in men are the features of discharge in chlamydia (Gonorrhea and Chlamydia, n.d.). In terms of laboratory diagnosis, the Nucleic Acid Amplification Test (NAAT) is sensitive and specific for both pathogens, and culture of both pathogens can be done. 3.
