Growing up in India I never really followed key rules while writing an essay, except including a title, an introduction paragraph, one or two paragraphs for the body of the essay and a conclusion paragraph. I was never asked to present the essay in a particular style. We could write in whatever way, as long as there were no grammatical mistakes, we did well. However, when I started school in Canada a few years ago, I was expected to write a five paragraph essay and was given a whole set of rules to follow all of a sudden. Although I have learned to create the correct structure of the essay, I still face difficulty in expressing logical arguments and writing essays in different styles. Usually, I start with an outline of what exactly I am going to write the essay on. Further, I proceed writing an introduction paragraph and include the thesis sentence in this paragraph. I repeat the thesis sentence in a different way in the conclusion paragraph to keep the reader engaged. My thesis consists of three main points, which then I would elaborate in each of the body paragraphs. I also give enough examples to explain each of these main points in detail. Each of the three paragraphs start with a topic sentence, mentioning what the paragraph is about and how it relates to the thesis sentence. I utilize a moderate amount of transition words to connect previous paragraphs to the next paragraph. I give enough examples to explain my main point in detail.
