When talking about Mars there are many things that could be considered goals, but there are some specific examples of what we would like to see happen sometime in the, hopefully, near future. The first goal is to determine whether live ever arose on Mars. On Mars there has been evidence to suggest there are areas where liquid water was once stable, and that below the surface it might still exist today. So life could have risen while there was a stable water supply. The second goal is to characterise the climate of Mars.
