2) ARUNDHATI ROY IS A POPULAR RADICAL CRITIC OF INDIAN POLITICS.
She gained her reputation as a grass roots advocate for the rural poor in her environmental work opposing dam building. Lately she has taken on the Indian government’s war on “Maoist rebels” in the tribal areas of northern India, including
Orissa and Bihar. Her perspective comes from the survival analysis perspective that human survival must include sustainability and respect for, not exploitation of, nature. In northern India tribal peoples in the jungles and highlands have been fighting for decades to resist the encroachment of corporate development by mining, cutting down forests, and damming the rivers.
Historically they have been called Naxalites and Maoists, and linked with communist insurgencies during the Cold War. Mainly, their mission has been to resist modern State and more recently corporate economic development.
Go online and access these three websites. The first is text and photos. The second is a video where Roy is asked about her support of the Maoists. The third is a human rights group worrying about equality concerns: http://www.outlookindia.com/printarticle.aspx?264738 http://www.countercurrents.org/roy160410.htm
