First I will explain why I chose to read 10-Minute Mindfulness: 71 Habits for Living in the Present Moment. In the next section, I will discuss the two topics in the book that made the biggest impression on me. Next, I will explain how the National Institute of Health (NIH) and the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) corroborate the benefits of mindfulness asserted in the book. Finally, I will discuss how this book has impacted my life.

The walking meditation has brought me back to “being” in my body. I feel more connected to my body when I do the walking exercise than I do all day. I am aware of the wind on my face. I am aware of my legs doing exactly what I ask them to do. I appreciate that I can see and hear what is around me. When intrusive thoughts pop up, I just go back to the walking mantra, “I am walking”, “I am walking” (Scott & Davenport, 2017). Depending on how cluttered my mind is that day, I may have to repeat it throughout my entire walk, but I am back in my body, out in the world, and not worrying about what I need to do when I get home.
Both the NIH and the NCCIH have information on their websites that corroborates the benefits of mindfulness as described in the book. The January 2012 NIH News in Health newsletter states the following, “Studies suggest that mindfulness practices may help people manage stress, cope better with serious illness and reduce anxiety and depression”
