Throughout the novel 1984, the audience is able to grasp the concept of the Party’s absolute control over its people, government, media, and most importantly history. As the main character Winston begins to explore feelings of guilt for betraying the Party, he also realizes how his work adds to the Party’s control. The quote “Who controls the past," ran the Party slogan, "controls the future: who controls the present controls the past.” (Orwell) only displays the depravity of the Party further. As the corrupt government powers cannot accept the truth that occurred in past events, they twist the information to gain influence over the people. This technique similarly relates to brainwashing as all records of anything contradictory to the wishes …show more content…
As the Party uses fabrication as a tactic to glorify itself and its agenda, so fake news is currently used to extol and/or damage the reputation of someone or something in order to gain readership and attract more individuals to a media groups online advertising venue. While the Party in the novel continued to rewrite history, media, and other news, similarly, groups repeat those actions today in classroom textbooks, articles, and other media outlets to portray a favorable or negative view of an event or individual to indoctrinate those ideals into its audience. One of the greatest parts of history is learning and deciphering the truth from it but, when that history is replaced with a lie that only benefits the government, it takes away the personal freedom of discovering the worlds of the past. Winston also stated, “And if all others accepted the lie which the Party imposed--if all records told the same tale--then the lie passed into history and became truth”
