Since the dawn of man, civilizations have sought to find the right balance of freedom and equality to hold their society together. Many governments throughout history have tried to seize as much wealth and power as possible. This describes the nation that Winston Smith, the protagonist of 1984, struggles to live in. The Party that controls Oceania, led by a shadowy figure known as Big Brother, takes ‘equality’ to its extremes. Everything is controlled by the Party. Education, production, money, even people’s minds are under full control. Under the rule of the Party, everyone suffers equally.
