Nature has always been a source of inspiration in the field of architecture. Vincent (1995) defined biomimicry as “the abstraction of good design from nature”. There are myriad examples of using biomimicry in the design process as a way to improve the sustainability and efficiency of the architecture. In this essay, two examples of biomimetic architecture, 30 St Mary Axe and Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay, are compared and evaluated to see how they apply biomimicry differently to allow their design to be more sustainable and efficient.
