America is made up of many diverse people groups with infinitely many varying ideas, making it nearly impossible to separate them into only two groups. This is where the idea of third parties come into play. Third parties are for the people that don't fit into either the Democratic or Republican mold. While they have never been a dominant winning force in the American political system, third parties still have a big part to play, and deserve some investigation. This paper will examine the ideologies of the Independent American Party, the Peace and Freedom Party, and the Citizens Party of the United States, comparing their views to those of the Democratic and Republican parties.

The Peace and Freedom Party is a liberal socialistic system that emphasizes the importance of complete social equality. This means that issues such as feminism and racial equality are very important to them. Being a socialist party, they also want to see the elimination of competition in the market. Their way of furthering their agenda is not by voting alone, but by social protest and militancy. Workers’ rights are a main focus in the Peace and Freedom Party’s goals. In addition to seeing minimum wage increase, they believe that workers should get longer vacations, have the right to strike for their rights, and should get the same pay for doing the same amount of work. The Peace and Freedom Party are subscribers to the theory of trickle up economics. They believe that by taxing the rich and flowing more money into working class Americans will stimulate and save the economy. When it comes to immigration, they are very open to accepting anyone who wants to be in this country. One of the foci in this party deals with trade and American jobs. A main objective of theirs is to get out of foreign trade agreements such as NAFTA and WTO, thus stimulating the economy by encouraging their supporters to buy products that are made in America. They also want to see an end to the outsourcing of American jobs. Strong nationalism is the cornerstone of the Citizens Party, logically resulting in the firm support in systems that are aimed at fixing America’s infrastructure, enforcing strong national security, and the elimination of the national debt. While they are in favor of a strong military, they believe it should only be used when it is in the best interest of the nation as a whole. Not unlike the Peace and Freedom Party, workers rights are important to the Citizens Party. However, their focus is placed more on getting the unemployed back to work and supporting small business owners and farmers. When it comes to environmental issues, they are against fracking, and they want to find cleaner, renewable sources of energy so that America can be truly independent from other countries and not have to deal with them to get oil. Additionally, a strong separation between church and state, the legalization of gay marriage, harsher punishments for those who commit gun violence, and the passage of pro-choice (when it comes to abortion
