Often when I am writing, the feeling of self-doubt, writer's block, and not knowing where to begin set in. Lamott did a great job of reiterating this notion by using casual language to give the excerpt a personality in Bird by Bird. The main idea Lamott is getting at for me is that the writing process is something that can be grueling, and that having high expectations for your first draft can be counterproductive. When I am writing, oftentimes I struggle with starting the process of drafting. I have all of these ideas in my head, but am still thinking about how to articulate them. Attempting to achieve something by being over critical of your own ideas will get you nowhere. Lamott
