1. What are the two methods you will use to determine the density of an unknown metal?

To calculate the density of an object, the mass and volume must be known. There are two methods by which these values can be calculated. In both methods, the mass is found using an electronic balance. The first method calculates the volume geometrically. Length and width or diameter will be measured, and based on the shape of the sample the appropriate equation can be used to calculate the volume. The second method for determining volume is water displacement. A graduated cylinder will be partially filled with water, then the metal will be placed into the cylinder. By recording the change in volume in the cylinder, the volume of the metal can be determined. Once the two values are known, the mass can be divided by the volume to calculate the density in mass per unit of volume.

What measuring devices will you use to determine the density of an unknown metal?

The mass of the metal will be determined by an electronic balance. The volume will be determined in two ways, one using a ruler or similar measuring device, and the other using a 100-mL graduated cylinder filled with water.
