Through my research of 720 Coate Court SW, during the time of 1870-1930, the use of automobiles was nonexistent. This home was built in the 1890, and at the time did not have an attached garage. This showed that the residents of the home likely did not own a car. Most of the necessities were in walking distance so there was no need for a car. Frank Nyhoff was a resident of 720 Coate Court, he worked a janitor at Hall street School. Hall Street school was just a four-block walk from his home and if he didn’t feel like walking there was a bus stop just one block away. Along with the school being a source of work, there were also many factories in the area along with the factories there was a railroad within walking distance. Unlike 720 Coate Court, 3909 40TH Street SW, was more of a permanent home. I researched this home from 1930-1970. It was built in 1955, and has an attached garage . As time progressed so did the need for people to distance themselves from the center of Grand Rapids, this was shown through garages becoming a key part in homes. Not only were they distancing themselves from the heart of the city they were also further from jobs, and other necessities such as grocery stores. But by doing this they were given more options as to where they could work, and shop. Despite cars becoming increasingly more popular, walking to and from school was still an option, A Christian school built in 1956 was within walking distance of the home.
