In almost 336 pages more or less Cheryl Strayed was able to gain our attention and bring us on her adventure on the Pacific Crest Trail. I think the biggest movement from this book is more people have hiked that trail and become aware of the trail itself. Growing up I only knew about the Appalachian trail. It never occurred to me that there a similar trail on the other side of the country. One reason it gained so much attention is “WILD was the first selection for Oprah's Book Club 2.0.” (cherylstrayed.com/wild). “Her writing has appeared in The Best American Essays, The New York Times Magazine, The Washington Post Magazine, Vogue, Allure, The Missouri Review, Creative Nonfiction, The Sun and elsewhere. Although I think these have different success compared to WILD and “Rent” and it’s because their poetry. I think most people look down at poetry for multiple reasons but still I like these two poems. The first poem “A Boat, Beneath a Sunny Sky” by Lewis Carroll (1871) is written from my favorite stories Through the Looking Glass. The poem is an acoustic and that means the first or last letter of each line in the poem create a word. In this poem it creates ““Alice Pleasance Liddell,” the child who was once his muse from his book. She became the muse because she would listen to all of his stories. Since her name was spelled out this poem she is also the muse for the poem “Carroll attempts to find solace in reminding himself that there will be more children to fill his “boat” and hear his stories. But he realizes that just as Alice shed her youth, these children will also inevitably “[drift] down the stream” from “Wonderland” to adulthood.” (shenandoahliterary.org 2 para). For being 144 years old and just being about a little girl who listens to his stories I think he became successful. The other poem is “O Captain! My Captain!” by Walt Whitman (1865) is writing about the assassination of Abraham Lincoln and his abolition of slavery. Most people know of this poem from the movie “Dead Poet’s Society” when Robin Williams stands on the desk and recites it. Although this poem is also old it
