What happens when a brother’s pride causes himself to push handicapped brother, Doodle, too far? Doodle is a handicapped boy who is not expected to live a long life. Doodle’s older brother, the narrator, is excited at first when he hears the news about his mother expecting a baby boy. The narrator wants a younger brother to play with, so when his parents tell him there is a possibility that there will be something wrong with the baby he made plans to smother him with a pillow. The brothers’ parents named the disabled child, William Armstrong at first because they expect him to die an early death and the name is only good for being put on a tombstone.
