The world relies on social interaction and thus human contact to function. This sets up a pathway for acquisition and transmission of various diseases, which can quickly become serious threats to the population of the world. In order to study, learn from, and prevent these diseases, epidemiologists were created. An epidemiologist is assigned with the task of discovering, researching and preventing the spread of disease on Earth. Some will work in high stress environments, like dealing with biological weapons and infectious diseases. Others will work on genetic diseases and sports related injuries. The Occupational Outlook Handbook recommends, “...students should take high school science courses, such as chemistry, physics, and biology. They should also take math courses, including calculus.” Currently, I am on track to have the ability to take all of these classes. Another factor that I control is my GPA and my ACT scores. To get into the school of my choice, the Milwaukee School of Engineering, I will need to maintain a 3.00/4.00 GPA. For my ACT, I will need a 22 Composite ACT / 24 Math sub score. The cost for me to attend MSOE to receive a degree in my prospective profession would cost a total of $50,015. Companies that a biomedical engineer might work for include Alcon Research, Ltd, B&B Microscopes Ltd and Beckman Coulter. The salary range as reported by the OOH is $86,960 per year. The occupational outlook for biomedical engineering is 27%. This is much faster than other jobs. Biomedical engineering is a career on the rise so there will be plenty of jobs available and much room to grow. Professional organizations advocate for workers, spread new findings and help facilitate the transfer of information. One of these professional organizations is the Biomedical Engineering Society. They offer conferences and journals for people in the profession. Another one of these organizations is the American Institute for Medical and Biological engineering.
