Mexico has three main political parties: PRI, PAN and PRD, and while two of the parties somewhat compare with the two major parties in the United States, the third gives the people of Mexico more options.

The PRD, Partido de la Revolucion Democratica or Party of the Democratic Revolution, promotes social reforms as well as welfare programs. They are supportive of unions, public services and business which are publically owned as well as supporting economic nationalism by doing what it can to protect its own economy by decreasing external imports and investments. They have loosened laws on abortion and have legalized same-sex civil unions even in a country that continues to be conservative on these issues and though they've taken on middle-of-the-road policies to win elections

This Party was huge in the 19th century against the Catholic Church and they wanted to prohibit religious instructions in schools in an attempt to weaken the control of religion in the society. They are a moderate party and had a huge impact on society, especially when it came to outside influences such as the Protestant missionaries who wished to bring their religion to the country. The evangelicals who side with the PRI tend to be rural, poor and less educated but are beginning to make up a higher percentage in numerous cities across the nation.
