In the novel, If I Ever Get Out of Here by Eric Gansworth and the film Smoke Signals, there are many differences when it comes to relationships in their lives. First, Lewis's dad's drunk at the bar on the rez and tells people stories so they buy him drinks, Victor's dad comes home drunk and beats Victor and his mom. Then in the film Victor has to overcome forgiveness with his father and find out the truth about why he left, while Lewis doesn't see his dad nor do we hear about him much in the novel. In the film, Thomas only has his grandma and his parents died in a fire, whereas George has his mom and his dad. George and Lewis are nice to each other, whereas Victor and Thomas aren't that close and Victor is kinda mean to Thomas. George and Lewis
