In the beginning of the story, the Misfit is having a conversation with his grandmother. He is telling her history from his life. “I was a gospel singer for a while,” The Misfit said. When he states this, it shows that he started his life as a man of faith. He shares later in the story about how Jesus threw everything off balance. “Jesus is the only One that ever raised the dead,” The Misfit continued, “and He shouldn’t have done it. He shown everything off balance. (pg. 12)” The Misfit believes that if Jesus was the son of God, then the only thing that matters is to follow him. However, he states that it’s unfair that he does not have proof of God. He did not get to see everything that Jesus did.

In this line, he wants to know what Jesus did in his life. If he were to see everything he did, he would believe. He wouldn’t be like he is now if he had some proof of Jesus. In line 375-376, it states “His voice seemed about to crack and the grandmother’s head cleared for an instant. She saw the man’s face twisted close to her own as if he were going to cry …” In these lines, the grandmother is coming into realization that the Misfit is not the man he is portraying. He is a man with a faith that has been complicated. The Misfit wants to believe in God. But what’s stopping him from restoring his faith? It’s the fact that there is no proof.
