A Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood is a dystopian novel about a totalitarian religious dictatorship, moreover, patriarchal oppression is the central scheme of the novel. The plot unwraps through different ways this oppression manifest against women by having total control of their lives. There is a complete system where the social division of labor is more rigid to women, which are categorized by their social class and reproductive capacity. This categorization determinate their social role and the way she is exploited. Notwithstanding, through the principal character, Offred, Atwood jumps between past and present to show the world where women were not subjected to men dictatorship highlighting how historical memory has empowerment elements.
