April 1993 was the first time I've ever been on a plane. America was a shock to me, I missed the family and friends that I've left behind in China. The next day, my sister brought me into an admissions office to register for high school. I had to take an admissions test that comprised of math and English. I understood most of the math portion of the test, however once it came to the English section, my mind gave in. I sat there struggling to formulate a word let alone a sentence. The teacher that was proctoring the exam later asked me if I can write the 26 English letters, I couldn't. I could only write about 15 letters and that was it. As a result, I was put into an English as a second or foreign language (ESL) class. The class itself was very diverse with students from every country you could imagine. Everyone there in the class seemed to already English except for me. I felt like a nobody and I felt dumb, I didn't know a single word in English, everything in the English language looked like hieroglyphics. I put a lot of my time and dedication into school, my first step was learning the 26 letters of the English Alphabet.
