At the beginning of the book, Meursault's mother dies. When he attends her funeral, he lacks emotions of his mother's death; this lets the reader know that he has a lack of emotion or that his relationship with his mother wasn't as close. His lack of emotion makes you think that he didn't care about his mother's death, which made her friends that attended her funeral feel some type of way. Since he wasn't concerned about his mother's death, it would make you believe that they weren't close. During the time Meursault kills the Arab man on the beach, he gets arrested for this murder. Him killing the Arab man shows you how he doesn't value his life since he kills the man out of frustration in the heat. When he gets to jail he feels like he is isolated from the world which makes him get into his thoughts.
