Here are some types of words that I think that help establish the tone for Douglass’s autobiography. One word that he uses is depravity because he uses it as meaning when in lines 8-10 it says “ that she was treating me with a lack of depravity ( or morally corrupt) indispensable to shutting me up in mental darkness. Chattel was another one because it says that she was talking about the housewife had a relationship with a mere chattel (or a slave) in line 19.

Also in line 31 it says that she was commencing to practice her husband's precepts (or a rule or principle regarding action or conduct.
