The Hero’s Journey in Star Wars: A New Hope With the recent installment in the Star Wars saga, the film that started it all seems like an apt choice to analyze in terms of the Joseph Campbell’s hero’s journey and the four functions he enumerates. That is, A New Hope follows all conventions of the matter, from beginning to end. Near the beginning of the movie (after we recognize Luke is the hero), Luke stumbles upon some droids with a recording of Princess Leia, requesting Obi Wan Kenobi’s assistance. This, of course, serves as the call to adventure, since it literally demands Luke to take action.
