When mama goes to the store and wants apples, a scene that is not in the book, is a perfect example that shows what time period it is. In this scene it is clearly apparent racism is present. As a viewer, someone might notice how the clerk did not offer to get Mama apples in the back of the store, while a white women easily got the clerk to mosey to the back to get her newly fresh apples. Minutes later, no viewer could have missed when the clerk, whom returned and gave the white woman a basket overflowing with bright shiny red apples and, gave Mama, not even a half empty basket of rotten moldy apples. Not only did he show racism with his actions, he shows it with his expression. When talking to Mama, the clerk acted like he hated his job and he said six words at the most. When he was talking to the white woman, he had a bright smile on his face and was very personable. Unlike the book, the movie can show expressions and sets that make the viewer less confused. With all of this information, the viewer can now tell that the movie takes place in the 1960’s, due to all of the signs of racism. Everyone must look out for hints because they can help all viewers understand the reasons for something
