First, this play has distinct characters with their own strong traits. The first main character is Ruth, a 30-year-old overwhelmed mother trying to make money and take care of the house for her family. Ruth works hard as a mother and a maid all while being pregnant with a baby she may or may not give up. What Ruth really wants most is to move. Although Ruth is a hard-worker, she seems disappointed and tired of her lifestyle. Her husband, Walter has his own dream of opening a liquor store that Ruth is not supportive of. However, Ruth knows that Walter is missing something that she cannot give to him, and wants that to change. Walter is in his mid-thirties, lean, and intense. Walter works as a chauffeur, but really wants to change that and will do what it takes, even if it means getting an illegal license to open the liquor store. The play skips his death and the family’s mourning and instead goes straight to when the check is on its way. Ruth is not that supportive of Walter’s idea for a liquor store because it is clear he has had these ideas in the past of ways to get money, but none of them ever really worked out. Beneatha and Walter have also already had a fight over medical school mainly because Walter is jealous that she gets the chance to accomplish her dream, but he feels no one is supportive of his dream. Next, Ruth is already two months pregnant when the play begins, and it skips her reaction of her finding out.
