Last Week Tonight with John Oliver Hilarious, witty, and informative? It’s not every day where the “average Joe” is able to enjoy serious news and have a good laugh within seconds of each other. This show brings important topics that not everyone in the United States is aware about but almost always impacts their lives one way or another. This highly produced show begins and ends as almost every other mainstream news anchors studio with an enticing entrance and solid outro. For this reason alone, many people can just tune out whatever the host is saying and John Oliver seems to know this fact very well. So how does he keep viewers engrossed into the show? Well he simply makes the things he discusses relatable to the common person. He discusses retirement plans and the deceptiveness of financial planners, addiction to opioids, mental health, mass shootings, discrimination, journalism, “Brexit”, the presidential election, police brutality, debt, credit reports, and etc. When you combine humor with relatable topics then it is simply a recipe for a successful show that will have viewers coming back for more whenever they can. The topics aren’t only relatable but also relevant. Police brutality was a segment on his show after the rapid rise of police brutality videos being see by many Americans, the 2016 presidential election was another topic discussed throughout his last few episodes because it is a very interesting topic that many Americans are passionate about. He has his own views about the election essentially calling it rock bottom and addressing the issues he has with the candidates.
