The film opens up Robert Redford narrating as Norman Maclean, with one of the main characters, Norman Maclean—with Robert Redford narrating—tying up a fishing line, and then the scene moves fairly quickly inside of a church, where he mentions that their father is a Presbyterian minister. Therefore, from the onset, the prominent worldview, Christian monotheism, begins to unfold, as it is ascertained quite quickly that their faith in God could play a role in the overall story.
