In the story A Rose for Emily by William Faulkner, the main character Emily took the phrase “till death do us part” to the extreme. William Faulkner 1897-1962, who came from an old southern family, grew up in Oxford, Mississippi. He joined the Canadian, and later the British, Royal Air Force during the First World War, studied for a while at the University of Mississippi, and temporarily worked for a New York bookstore and a New Orleans newspaper. Except for some trips to Europe and Asia, and a few brief stays in Hollywood as a scriptwriter, he worked on his novels and short stories on a farm in Oxford. Faulkner’s most famous, most popular, and most different short story, “A Rose for Emily” awakens the terms Southern gothic and bizarre, two types of literature in which the general tone is one of gloom, terror, and understated violence. The story is Faulkner’s best example of these forms because it contains unimaginably dark images: a decaying mansion, a corpse, a murder, a mysterious servant who disappears, and, most horrible of all, necrophilia, meaning an erotic or sexual attraction to corpses. A feminist critic would dislike “A rose for Emily”, by william Faulkner because, it made Emily’s character seem crazy. A feminist critic might like the story because of Emily’s independent attitude and how she is determined to have a man. Camisha Burnett
