In the satirical image called “don’t shoot cartoon” it shows a cop pointing his gun at a group of three people. The three people look scared, and they all have their hands up, while the cop is pointing the gun at them in his police uniform, which has “Ferguson” and “FPD” written on it. He still has the gun pointed at the civilians however, he is looking back yelling at a person with a camera videotaping him; labeled as “the media” and the cop and group of people are all yelling the phrase “DON’T SHOOT!”. In the cartoon, the civilians seem to be wearing normal everyday clothes. The officer’s eyes look very dead and show little emotion, and his body language shows that he is in control. The camera man however looks like a short, chubby guy who is pointing his camera and is not going to move at all. The artist for the “Don’t Shoot Cartoon” is Steve Stack of the Minneapolis Star Tribune. He is a very well-respected cartoon artist and has won almost every award in his field. He illustrated the “Don’t Shoot Cartoon” in 2014 after there was a shooting in Ferguson, Missouri where an African American 18 year old named Michael Brown was shot and killed by a police officer. The police officer claimed it was self-defense and that Michael fit the description of a robbery suspect that occurred earlier that day. A witness claimed that while the cop was firing at Michael, he kept yelling “Don’t Shoot”. Therefore, Stack included the specific quote “Don’t Shoot!” in his illustration and labeled the badge FDP on the officer’s uniform. Stack uses connotation with the big text box bubble saying, “Don’t Shoot!” being connected by both groups (being the officer and civilians) while, having different
