What the father taught “[is not] something [that can be learned] in school [and] it [is not] useless.” (Carrier 94). The farmer acknowledges the father's skill and it is the reason why the farmer kept the alder branch the father used to find water. The author realized that fact too late and he cannot do anything to repair the damage. Another reason why the author feels guilty is because he could not do what his father has done. The father told the author that “[dowsing is] something [his] own father taught [him]” (Carrier 95). The author could have had the best of both worlds. He could of practice dowsing and still become a successful writer, but he took his father's teachings for granted. He lost the opportunity that was given to him. The maiden caught the Tsar's attention because of her wisdom and intelligence. He gave the maiden several challenges to test her and she passed with flying colors. She is wise because she lived a life in poverty and it made her mature in the mind. Therefore, tackling the Tsar's challenges became second nature to her. In fact, she is wiser than the Tsar because the Maiden can foresee the future which the Tsar can not. When the Tsar announces that he will marry the maiden, she asked the Tsar to make a contract with her. The contract will allow her to take whatever she wants if she were told to leave the palace. Which happens several years after their marriage. The couple had an argument which results in the Tsar banishing her from the palace. She used the contract to take the Tsar with her and that act reignited the Tsar's love for the Tsarina. She did not learn a lesson from the conflict with the Tsar because she is the one who is outwitting him, but she could do that if she had not cultivated her wisdom at a young age.
What the maiden and the author had in common is that they both use their wisdom and intelligence to be successful. The author chose to become a writer. So, he went to many different place and schools to learn to write. That is how he become a famous author who has a documentary about him and his village.
