The movie, A Simple Plan, which came out in 1998 by Sam Raimi, is a thrilling, hopeful, and devastating example of how the perceived American Dream is not all that it is dreamt up to be. According to Eugene Novikov, from Film Blather, A Simple Plan is, “a complex look at how 4 different people react to the concept of potential sudden wealth, how it changes them and how it brings out the worst in them.” In an everyday town with no name and no hope three men find, “the American Dream in a god-damn gym bag”, which contained 4.4 million dollars, or at least they thought they had found it (Film). Lou wanted the easy way out of his problems with the money and he would be happy with his life as the town drunk. Jacob wanted his brother’s life, which seemed to be the ideal American Dream, but he could not achieve this on his own. Hank and Sarah wanted a better life for themselves and their daughter and to be able to get out of the small town and away from their small town jobs. In the end no one got what they wanted or had a happy ending due to the greed and paranoia of the money.
