She was embarrassed by her parents and how they raised her. She was also embarrassed about where she lived and what she’s been through. Walls’s mother was never ashamed of who she was. She explained to Walls, “You're way too easily embarrassed. Your father and I are who we are,” (Walls 5). When Walls asked her mother what she should tell people about her parents her mother said, “Just tell the truth,” (Walls 5). She resented her parents for many years after she moved. It took her a while to forgive them. She may have desired to defend herself, but had too much at risk to do so. She was too ashamed to defend herself. She had to keep many of her thoughts to herself. It was a very personal topic. If she had responded to the professor about not knowing about being homeless, she may have let out a great deal of anger that she had stored
