A Soldier's Short Story: The Yellow Wall

She raises her hand, stands up from her desk, and hesitantly states her opinion. Her heart is telling her to just sit down and keep quiet but she can not hold it in anymore. She knows what it feels like to be homeless. She knows what it feels like to be hungry. She knows what it feels like to be dirty and looked down upon. Her mother and father had chose that life for themselves and the family. She knew what she was talking about and could explain it all with ease, but she was at conflict with herself about if she should. Finally, her professor put her in an uncomfortable position. She could either correct her professor and risk being looked down upon and ruining everything she worked hard to escape her old life for, or just let it go and sit back down. She chooses the easy way out and lets her professor think she stumped her. There is a lack of self confidence which makes it hard for Walls to defend herself or take actions to deal with her own problems; she is better at ignoring them and moving on. She was embarrassed by her parents and how they raised her. She was also embarrassed about where she lived and what she’s been through. Walls’s mother was never ashamed of who she was. She explained to Walls, “You're way too easily embarrassed. Your father and I are who we are,” (Walls 5). When Walls asked her mother what she should tell people about her parents her mother said, “Just tell the truth,” (Walls 5). She resented her parents for many years after she moved. It took her a while to forgive them. She may have desired to defend herself, but had too much at risk to do so. She was too ashamed to defend herself. She had to keep many of her thoughts to herself. It was a very personal topic. If she had responded to the professor about not knowing about being homeless, she may have let out a great deal of anger that she had stored
