“A Sound of Thunder” and “Being Prey’s” settings can be contrasted, but primarily compared. Both of the stories feature threatening surroundings that foreshadow trouble for the characters. Furthermore, the stories have predators, but of different species. In addition, “A Sound of Thunder” is set in the year 2055, and “Being Prey” is in the present, making certain elements of the stories different. In “A Sound of Thunder”, Eckels is foolish to have signed up to hunt dinosaurs, but then risk everyone’s lives because he wasn’t prepared for the action and risk it entitles. He says, “No, it can’t be. Not a little thing like that. No!” after he steps on the butterfly, which shows he regrets what he did accidentally. Plumwood is also foolish, because she doesn’t trust her instincts when she senses that she may be in danger. In “Being Prey”, it says “I would be safe from crocodiles in the canoe- I had been told- but swimming and standing or wading at the water’s edge were dangerous.” Plumwood doesn’t realize her mistakes made in the beginning would have such outrageous consequences.
