In A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams creates substantial distance from each of the main characters in the play that they can be easily contrasted by their appearance, personalities, and where they’re from. In the play a married couple is forced to live with an sister of the wife when she seeks help after becoming bankrupt. After she moves in, relationships between the triangle of characters become twisted and reveals each character's true nature. When It comes to opposites in the play the first pair of characters that come to mind would be Blanche and Stanley. Ever since Blanche moved into the Kowalski’s two-room apartment there has been a never ending clash between the two characters. The fact that they both keep this going show’s their true personalities and also how similar both of them really are. Both Stanley and Blanche found different ways to hurt each other but, they both did it for the same reason of not being able to live knowing the other still influences Stella. Blanche tries to get Stella to leave Stanley by calling him ape-like and a monster. Stanley’s reaction to this was brutal and decided to rape Blanche with his physical strength. A supporting quote of these actions of the two characters is, "There isn't a damn thing but imagination, and lies, and tricks! [ ... ] I've been on to you from the start. Not once did you pull the wool over my eyes.”
Overall, Blanche and Stanley have been similar in many aspects than one would catch during their first read-through the play, however, after more analyzation Blanche and Stanley are truly similar characters. Whether it is how they desire stability and power, their perfect, peaceful life or their utter desire to subdue the other, Blanche and Stanley are most similar when their dark sides come
