By the first week in June, Becca forgave Alex and Charlie for they gave her a poem which she recorded in her journal.
Alex was due to leave on June 19th as he had gotten his father's consent and had the rank of corporal. He was in Company C with Henry Baxter commanding. On the 18th he had given Becca a lock of his hair and she gave him a necktie and a carryall.
Three weeks into Becca’s summer vacation came the first great battle in Virginia. The Confederates had a resounding victory. Now Lincoln called for one hundred thousand more volunteers. Becca hoped the Seventh would never be called.
