Artie suffers from survivor’s guilt due to the fact that he was always being compared to his dead brother Richieu and how he was the perfect child who would have been a doctor or a position of importance and not an artist, and he also was also blamed for his own mother's suicide, but lastly he had many problems taking the success of the book due to the fact that it was about this mass-murder.
Artie was compared to his brother Richieu by mostly his parents. His feels bad due to the fact that, his dead brothers photo was hanging in his parents bedroom. He was told during his mother’s funeral in ways that it was his fault she killed herself. In the one of the men says to him at his mother’s funeral, “It’s his fault- the punk.” (103) His depression and anxiety may be from the fact that he has survivor’s guilt about his mother killing herself. Much after this he was put in a mental hospital for depression and suicide. A third reason for survivor’s guilt deals with his success.
When he finished both of his Maus books he was given tons of credit and success for them. He didn't like the success though sure it was positive success but it always bothered him. He didn’t like it because of what the book was about, a mass-murder of the Jews in Europe. As he would look back at his success it would send him back to square one, the death of all these Jews and that most didn't survive. This caused him much pain while writing this book and after it was published and received much success.
Artie has survivor’s guilt. He even shows it throughout the story. In book two he shows his guilt when he is talking about his dead brother to his wife, Francoise. In book one he is blamed for his mother’s suicide and he even gets depressed about taking the success that the Maus books were given.
