In the novel “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn,” the author displays traits of one of the main characters, Katie Nolan, by using specific details to demonstrate she is a realistic and an ambitious character. The author, Betty Smith, creates the character Katie as a person who never gives up no matter what she goes through. Katie has a very hard life. Readers can understand this very clearly about Katie and her family. All her life from being a Rommely to a Nolan, she has been unprivileged and in need of money. While going through this all her life, she exhibits the trait of being realistic. Right after Francie was born, Katie talks to her mother, Mary, of how she believes “I can’t teach her anything more than I, myself, know and I know so little. You are poor, Mother. She is willing to put up with all the hard work through the next chapter of her life and sacrifice her freedoms just to be with the man she desires. Even though Katie knew what she wanted, she still will face the reality that the one independent choice that she made was truly the a huge mistake. She proved herself to be an ambitious character when she lost her best friend and gave up many opportunities just to be with Johnny. Every person has different characteristics that shape the person they are.
