In a Wrinkle in Time, by Madeleine L’Engle, Meg saves her family with compassion and loyalty. Through the power of love, they overcame the black thing. The black thing is filled with hatred and doubt. In this novel, Meg struggled with an internal conflict, but as the story progressed she realized that she needed to be herself. Throughout the novel, A Wrinkle In Time, Meg proves to be a character who shows unlabored compassion, understands wisdom, and learns perseverance.
In the novel, a Wrinkle in Time, Meg shows compassion through the hardships and the advantages. When Charles Wallace began to doubt himself, Meg responded with, “You’ll know him! Of course you’ll know him! The way you’d know me even without looking because I’m always there for you, you can always reach in-” (126). Meg needed guidance with being confident. Meg felt secure when she was holding somebody’s hand. Until she realizes, “But it seemed that ever since they had begun their journeys she had been looking for a hand to hold, so she stuffed her fists into her pocket and walked along behind the two boys.-I’ve got to be brave, she said to herself.-I will be.” (152). Meg kept going without the comfort of a hand to hold. Meg realizes that if something needs to be done she should go into it faithfully with an open heart. When Meg and Mr. Murray tessered off Camazotz they went through the black thing. Meg became paralyzed. The book states, “Disappointment was as dark and corrosive in her as the Black Thing.” (195). The black thing had entered her and was causing doubt. Right about as all hope was lost, Meg was able to use her wisdom to figure out a
