Albatross Around One’s Neck
a.) This is an allusion to a poem written by Samuel Taylor where a sailor shoots an albatross (which was considered good luck) and in order to punish him from cursing the ship, his mates force him to wear it around his neck until the curse of the dead albatross ends.
b.) In modern times, an albatross around one’s neck is a metaphor for a burden or an ongoing problem.
