(A Discussion of the Format and Scoring of the AP Literature Exam) In only a few short months, I, as well as many of my colleagues will be taking the AP Literature Exam. This test will challenge us and test over our comprehension of literature. “The AP Programs are designed for high school students who wish to take college-level courses,” (Rankin). This test will provide ust the opportunity to score high enough to receive college credit before entering college classes. This would prove a great service and reduce the amount of time spent on entry level college courses. The AP Literature Exam has a very specific format to provide a score to determine my future, and will take certain amounts of preparation from myself to achieve my goals.

“The exam is 3 hours long and has two sections — multiple-choice and free-response,” (Smith). Within the total three hour test, the two sections each have their own set of time limits. “First is an hour-long, 55-question multiple choice section, and then a two hour, three question free-response section,” (McCammon). Each test is designed with a particular purpose in mind on how to test us. “The multiple choice section tests critical reading skills...the free-response section tests students' ability to analyze and interpret literary texts,” (Meyers). The total composite score given will determine what ranking you fall within, anywhere from 1-5. This score is the most important score, as it is what determines if you will receive college credit for the test. “Any score 3 or higher is considered passing, though some colleges only accept 4s or 5s for credit,” (Edwards). At UK, a score of three or above on the exam will be given credit for it and placed accordingly. A three or four gives me three credit hours of an English 100 class, while a 5 gives me three credit hours of English 230. “ A high school senior who wishes to have AP scores evaluated for academic credit or placement should have the results sent to the Office of Undergraduate Admission and University Registrar,” (UK Staff). All I have to do is send my results to the University, and everything is taken care of by them. Any passing score will tell the university that I am either, “qualified, well qualified, or extremely well qualified,” (Rankin). The University of Kentucky makes this process very simple, and will place a minimal amount of stress on me going into this exam in
