APU Panel Debate
“Is There Such a Thing as Social Justice?”

7:00-8:30 PM, UTCC

In going to the debate I did not exactly know what to expect. I had never really taken the time to think about the definition of social justice. I had most certainly heard the term used in conversation, but I never took time to understand what the term was describing. Because of this I was looking forward to a discussion/dialogue on the issue. And, in fact, that is what the moderator, Dr Musa suggested was supposed to be. Although the event was designed to be more of a dialogue and was entitled “Is There Such a Thing as Social Justice?”, I was surprised by how many students came to the dialogue already having chose an answer. This turned the dialogue into a debate. I unexpectedly saw a friend of mine at this event and asked him why he was going. His answer was that he went in order to support a his particular side of the debate. Because of instances like this, the event was more a debate fueled by political ideals than a discussion about the definition of social justice.

Because this is a Christian school and because Jesus seems to suggest the redistibument of wealth to the poor I began to wrestle with the question: How far are we as a Christians supposed to go in order to impose Christ like morals on others?Scripture clearly shows that Jesus demanded that the wealthy give their money to the poor.
