Years of travel, higher education and polities was essential in the foundation of making the second president of USA. John Q. Adams aristocratic ways of living and upbringing made him very successful in history. Adam's parents decided to send him on trip to Europe. Abigail Adams knew this journey would widen and widen him. To insure a lasting effect of the trip, she will write a letter highlighting the importance of the trip. In this letter she employs comparison and illustration to advise her son. In the beginning of the letter Abigail Adam employes comparison to illustrate the benefit of her son’s journey. Adams compares “judicious traveler” to a river. She stated that a “river increase its stem the further it flows from the source.” Adams
