The concept of liberty has been engrained into western society for quite some time, from the constitution of the United States' famous opening statement “....insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution...” To the Magna Carta being created as “a statement of liberty' above all law and government” It is evident that early western leaders and scholars considered liberty to be a corner stone of any civilization or political system. Because it gives the individual the best tools to create a better life for themselves, by creating the life they want. This then, when the individual is striving to make the best life possible for themselves, it also betters the society and people around them. Marx argues that giving people individual freedom and liberty is not inherent to a successful or happy society. One point that Marx makes is that while political freedom provided or “allowed” under the state under liberty isn't necessarily a bad thing, rather, he viewed it as a good thing. However he argued that under a liberal system, political freedom is the highest attainable state of liberty achievable, implying that true human freedom is not feasible due to it causing the individual becoming isolated from the community around them.
