Abraham Lincoln Emancipator Analysis

Most historians argue if Abraham Lincoln was a racist or an Emancipator. A racist does not view all races equally. An emancipator is a person who wants to free slaves. Abraham Lincoln was an emancipator because of his actions displayed in the “Emancipation Proclamation”, “Lincoln's Remarks on Colonization”, “Was Lincoln a Racist?”, and the “Fourth Debate with Douglas” Documents. The Emancipation Proclamation was the most important proclamation that supported him as an emancipator. The Emancipation Proclamation declared to free slaves in Confederate states and allowed the enlistment of African American men in the Union military. To many people this would be considered racism, but Lincoln goes on to say “...upon this occasion I do not perceive that because the white man is to have the superior position the negro should be denied everything (Fourth Debate with Douglas).” In the video “Was Lincoln Racist?” African Americans were either viewed as human, property, or citizens. Lincoln sees African Americans as humans and that even though they will not be treated equally with whites they should still have some rights. Lincoln makes a clear point that he has never had an African American woman for a wife or a slave, so it is possible to prosper without slaves. Therefore, Abraham Lincoln is an Emancipator. His actions displayed in the “Emancipation Proclamation”, “Lincoln's Remarks on Colonization”, “Was Lincoln a Racist?”, and the “Fourth Debate with Douglas” Documents clearly showed that he was against slavery. He may not have said blatantly that he was an abolitionist to the people of the United States, in fear of trying to keep the union from splitting into the North and South.
