In Abuela Invents the Zero, the discrepancies between Constancia and Abuela’s values cause Constancia to disrespect her grandmother. Unlike her Abuela, Constancia was born in a society that did not praise their elderly. Hence, she made no attempt to improve her distant relationship with her grandmother. In Abuela Invents the Zero, Judith Cofer Oriz states, “Anyway, I had seen her only three or four times in my entire life, whenever we would go for somebody’s funeral…” Moreover, during an incident at church, Constancia was so embarrassed that she abandoned her Abuela in her time of need.
